Going for a jog is easy, but where do you sprint? More and more people today are becoming interested in training for speed. For athletes it is essential and plays a big role in determining their success. For the average person looking to get in shape, running sprints provides a quick and effective option for dropping body fat.
At EPOK our goal is to bring awareness to the ideas of speed training and ultimately to get more people using this beneficial training method. In an effort to do this we will be identifying the best local places to hit the field and sprint.
In this article we are going to share the best places to sprint near downtown Orlando.
Al Coith Park
Al Coith Park is located in the center of the Delaney Park neighborhood. It is a wide open field with a few standard fitness stations throughout. I will say that the field quality is not the best, so if you are going to workout here make sure to walk the grass first to find a good spot to sprint. Other then that the park is never crowded and has plenty of distance to work in some longer speed work.
The full spectrum of speed and agility training is available to you here. This is the main reason why I like this park so much, you can work on acceleration, max velocity, change of direction, or conditioning all in a relatively quiet environment. The weekends do get a bit crowded but most of that is across the street at Delaney Park, where they have youth baseball games.
Cherokee Park
Located down the street from Al Coith is Cherokee Park, a large field located between Lake Cherokee and Lake Davis in the Delaney Park neighborhood. Of all the available places to sprint near downtown, this park is hands down my favorite. It is a great place to grab a quick uninterrupted speed workout. Short of a few dogs playing fetch, there is hardly ever anyone here.
The park itself is just a field and some benches, but there is more than enough space for max velocity work. Sprints over 40 yards and all flying variations can easily be done here. This is important when looking for a place to train speed because of the multitude of performance benefits. Nothing develops the characteristics of speed quite like top end speed or max velocity training.
Cypress Grove Park
Cypress Grove Park is definitely the most crowded on this list. The place is huge, it includes multiple open fields that are surrounded by a trail, a basketball court, playground, volleyball courts, and a historic mansion that hosts events. All of these amenities attract quite a lot of people, so this park is only a good option during off hours. Head out here on a weekend and you’ll be competing for space with multiple pick up soccer games and a youth flag football league.
But, if you can find the time to train here during the weekday you are in for a treat. The fields here are big, with multiple stretches of over 100 yards, meaning you can use any and all exercises available for developing speed. Depending on the time it is very likely you will be the only person out on these fields. It’s like training by yourself on a football field and to be honest even that isn’t giving it justice
So, Where Do You Sprint Near Downtown?
I hope that this article has provided a few options when it comes to training for speed in and around downtown Orlando. The goal is to get more people, especially athletes, to include sprints into their weekly training. Speed is a game changer, both for dominating in sport and maintaining function in life. So hit the field and get after it.
